Sans-Arc Studio
Off-Beat Architecture

Website
Overview Sans-Arc means “without architecture”. Founded in Adelaide on Kaurna Country by registered architect Matiya Marovich, the studio makes what it calls off-beat spaces: a wilderness-hut bar built in a former bin alley (Pink Moon Saloon, 2015), five gelato shops for Gelato Messina, the Super Collection of hardware with Bankston, and a growing body of houses from Adelaide’s suburbs to a hill above Bass Strait. In 2025 Sofia Bistro won the Marjorie Simpson Award for Small Project Architecture at the SA Architecture Awards and a National Commendation, alongside three further state awards and commendations. In 2024, after nearly a decade on a modest site at sansarcstudio.com.au, the studio needed a portfolio that matched the work. Huettun Labs worked with Matiya and the team on the relaunch: brand consultancy for the digital experience, UI/UX design and a Webflow CMS build on a new domain, sansarc.studio.
The challenge Architecture portfolios fail in two ways. They drown the work in interface, or they show so little that a prospective client cannot tell what the studio does. Sans-Arc needed to present 35 projects across hospitality, residential, retail and product in a way that let the photography lead, made the breadth of the practice obvious in one scroll, credited every builder, engineer, graphic designer and photographer, and could be updated by a two-person studio the week a project finished. It also had to move the practice to a new domain without losing a decade of search equity.
Brand consultancy (Huettun Labs) Off-beat, not off-hand. We worked with Sans-Arc’s existing wordmark and voice to define a digital tone that is playful in copy and disciplined in layout: the studio describes itself as “off-beat” and “fun” in one sentence, and the interface earns that by staying out of the way. The one-line pitch. “An ‘off-beat’ architecture and interior design studio, Sans-Arc makes fun and beautiful spaces that connect you to people and place” was set as the site’s opening statement. Country as context. Every project is labelled with the Country it stands on, Kaurna, Boonwurrung and others, and the footer carries an Acknowledgement of Country, making a studio value visible on every page. Credits as culture. A standard credits block on every project naming client, builder, structural engineer, graphic designer, landscape, concrete and photographer, reflecting how the studio works and giving collaborators a reason to link back. Awards as proof. A Selected Awards list on About, from the 2025 SA and National Architecture Awards to Good Design Awards for the Super Collection, placed beside the director’s registration numbers in three states.
UI and UX design (Huettun Labs) Visual system. A warm grey palette, charcoal type and generous white space, set in GT Alpina Typewriter, a monospace-flavoured serif that reads like an architect’s specification, with Telas for the wordmark. Layouts scale across four breakpoints down to small phones. Portfolio-first homepage. The one-line pitch, a three-word navigation (Projects, About, Contact) and the filter bar, then the full project grid: image, category, title and year, newest first. Live filtering. All, Hospitality, Residential and Other filters that narrow the grid in place without a page load, so a restaurateur and a homeowner each see their world in one tap. Project template. Title, year and Country, a short synopsis, a hero gallery, the credits block, a longer narrative and further image sets, repeated identically across all 35 projects so the work, not the layout, differentiates them. About. The studio philosophy in three short paragraphs, the director’s credentials and the awards list, with six studio photographs. Contact. Phone, email, Instagram and a two-field message form protected by reCAPTCHA, with the studio address and Acknowledgement of Country.
Website development (Huettun Labs) Platform. Webflow, with a CMS collection for projects (category, year, Country, synopsis, narrative, credits and multi-image galleries) so new work publishes in minutes without a developer. Filtering and galleries. Finsweet CMS Filter attributes for instant category filtering, and Swiper for the project galleries, loaded from a CDN with versions pinned. Imagery. Every one of the 171 homepage images lazy-loaded, with Webflow’s responsive image variants on project pages. Forms and security. Webflow native forms with Google reCAPTCHA, HTTPS everywhere with HSTS on Cloudflare’s edge. Domain migration. The move from sansarcstudio.com.au to sansarc.studio with permanent redirects from the old domain, preserving inbound links from a decade of press.
Results Thirty-five projects, four categories and ten years of work presented in one scroll, filterable in one tap. A new domain and identity online in time for the studio’s most awarded year, with the Marjorie Simpson Award and a National Commendation for Sofia Bistro listed on launch. A portfolio the studio updates itself, from a 2015 laneway bar to a 2026 house above Bass Strait.
